The original Chinese Mei Tai was a traditional piece of cloth with four unpadded straps that secure by bringing the straps together in a bow against a torso. The original carrier has a history that stretches back hundreds of years as a product utilized by mothers, often carrying their babies in a simple fabric carrier.
A variation of this model emerged in Austrailia in the 60s and later climbed into the baby market in North America in 2003. The Mei Tai baby carrier is now doned by hundreds of brand names like the Ellaroo or the BabyHawk, which come in a variety of different features and fabrics.
The Asian Baby Carier is one of the most versatile baby carriers available, easily manipulated into five different carrying positions whereas most other slings only have two. With its two padded shoulder straps measuring 68 inches long and 4 inches wide, there is extreme comfort available to the parent to wear this sling for long periods of time.
The waist strap is 20 inches long and the square body to frame the baby, all make for an adaptable fit to use in any weather conditions whether you are wearing light or bulky clothing. Based on how the straps are tied will be how the baby is positioned in the carrier.
If the baby wants to be tucked away, propped up to see everything, secured for breast feeding with its legs in or out is up to the child by a simple tie of the straps. The Mei Tai has no snaps, buckles, rings, clips or Velcro on the original design to get in the baby's way or
be assembled incorrectly by the parent. There is an optional adjustable feature that has two snap tabs at the base of the carrier.
If leaving these tabs open, the baby will be seated in a cross-legged position and completely covered by the fabric. Snap these two tabs together to make the bottom of the Asian baby carrier smaller, enables newborns to comfortably have their legs out of the carrier and still be properly positioned.
With the snap tabs, the carrier has two positions of adjust ability for their babies bottom and leg comfort. The snap tab extender is available as an accessory for those who would like incremental adjust ability.
